The Perfect Weekend in Montreal: From Poutine to Haute Cuisine
Updated: Mar 29
Montreal is a city bursting with visual delights and rich cultural experiences all conveniently located near one another, making it the ultimate weekend getaway destination. Our recent escapade through this vibrant Canadian metropolis unfolded as a sensory journey, offering a perfect fusion of delectable cuisine, charming boutiques, and captivating entertainment.
Eating in Montreal
You simply cannot visit this city without sampling its iconic poutine, a mouthwatering combination of French fries, gravy, and cheese curds so fresh that they squeak when you bite into them. Our favourite spot for this delight comes recommended by many locals: La Banquise. Here you can opt for the classic rendition or a loaded version with various meats and toppings piled high, including Montreal smoked meat.
Speaking of Montreal smoked meat, head to Schwartz’s Deli to sample their legendary smoked meat sandwich. The succulent flavours make it a must-try, and the deli's historic charm adds to the experience.
In addition to these casual fares, Montreal has an incredible number of fine dining establishments as well. We indulged at Vin Mon Lapin, recently crowned the best restaurant in Canada. Its cozy French bistro ambiance and ever-changing menu of unique dishes captivated our palates.
Monarch, another culinary gem ranking on the best in Canada list, impressed us with a perfect classic steak dinner served with a delicious Bearnaise sauce. Even if the restaurant is full, pull up a seat and dine at their expansive bar, and you will feel transported to a European capital.
The highlight of our gastronomic journey in this city was a 16-course omakase experience at Sushi by Scratch. The evening began with an email asking us to arrive early for complimentary drinks in their lounge, and provided cryptic instructions for how to find the location.
We were served dinner in a room meant for no more than 12 patrons, and were able to indulge in an eye-opening sake pairing as well. Here we tried bone marrow for the first time which was so delicious on its own, we were delighted to see it being torched and melted overtop of the fish on our next dish as well. The salmon nigiri was such a highlight that after our 16 courses, we still ordered more.
Drinking in Montreal
Next up is drinks. Fueling our days, Crew Collective in Old Town emerged as the best coffee spot, blending delicious brews with the charm of a beautiful historic building.
For evening drinks there are a plethora of unique bars to choose from. Our favourite was the Cold Room, which stole our hearts with its hidden entrance, leading to an underground speak-easy style room, with a bar that ran its entire length.
Shopping in Montreal
Montreal is a fashionista’s dream, so exploring the city's shopping scene is a must. If you meander through Old Town or Saint Catherine Street, you’ll be sure to discover a mix of name brands and independent boutiques. Our favourites include Rooney, Espace Pepin, and Delano Design, which all showcase unique pieces. However, it was the shop Feline that filled up most of our credit cards with upscale clothing that blends a funky edge with comfort. During our visit we were assisted and styled by the designer herself, so if you are looking for one-of-a-kind pieces, this is the spot.
Things to do in Montreal
To add a cultural twist to our weekend, we caught a Cirque du Soleil show under their tent, right by the river in Old Town. Montreal is the home base of this phenomenal company, so where better to enjoy an awe-inspiring performance.
Montreal, with its culinary wonders, vibrant culture, and hidden gems, left us enchanted. From poutine to haute cuisine, secret bars to unique boutiques, every moment in this city felt like a chapter in a captivating novel, inviting us to return for more adventures.
