Napa Valley, synonymous with world-class wines and stunning landscapes, invites you to embark on a weekend getaway that transcends the ordinary. Whether you're a wine connoisseur, a food enthusiast, or simply seeking a serene escape, Napa Valley offers a plethora of experiences to indulge in. Here's your guide to planning the perfect weekend in this picturesque wine country.

Stay in Style: Downtown Napa vs. Rural Retreat

Begin your Napa adventure by strategically planning your accommodations. For a dynamic experience, we recommend staying at least one night in downtown Napa. Here, you can walk to bars for tastings, explore charming boutiques, and dine in the heart of the city's culinary scene. The atmosphere is akin to an adult Disneyland, exuding charm and vibrancy.

After your night in the city, transition to the tranquil side of Napa by choosing a rural property for the remainder of your stay. Ideally, you would opt for a place with a swimming pool, a fireplace, and oodles of charm. Our pick was Hotel Yountville and it did not disappoint, even adding a hot tub to this dreamy wish list. Staying in the country provides a quintessential wine country experience, where you can drive or Uber to the actual wineries(rather than bars) to do your tastings, relishing the breathtaking scenery along the way.

Diverse Tasting Experiences: Mix It Up!

Napa Valley boasts an abundance of wineries, each offering an array of unique tasting experiences. Monotony can detract from your enjoyment of each new winery, so diversify your plans by selecting a mix of different types of tastings. Try a food or cheese pairing, a patio session, or an in-depth cellar tour. Also, include some walk-in options for spontaneous moments.

We chose to explore Domaine Carneros for an exclusively Asian cuisine food pairing, and neither the bubbles nor the food disappointed. We savoured the award-winning porch tasting at Stag's Leap, which boasted one of the most beautiful properties we drove through in Napa. At Del Dotto, we were able to try a unique barrel-tasting experience complete with pizza and snacks at the end. Another afternoon we enjoyed a casual walk-in at Alpha and Omega for a tasting in front of their pond. Some wineries even offer walking vineyard tours or ATV rides if you are visiting in warmer weather. The key is to keep it diverse to heighten the overall impact.

Bubbles, Budget, and Beyond

For enthusiasts of bubbles, Napa Valley has a surprise – sparkling wineries owned by iconic Champagne houses. Domaine Carneros (Taittinger) and Chandon (Moet) offer sparkling wines made using the traditional champagne method, and our amateur palates certainly could not taste the difference.

It could be beneficial to research a vineyard’s wine selection and prices before your visit, especially if you plan to take bottles home. A lot of wineries here also offer exclusive Napa bottles that come with a higher price tag to match their increased quality, so be prepared.

Dining Delights: From Burgers to Michelin Stars

Napa Valley caters to all palates, from legendary roadside burgers at Gott's to Michelin-starred dining experiences. Treat yourself to a high-end meal at iconic spots like The French Laundry or opt for a multi-course lunch with a view at The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil as we did. This restaurant even offered some exclusive wines that were so delicious, we brought a bottle home. Don't forget to indulge in a few In-N-Out burgers with animal-style fries for a classic treat.

Shop 'til You Drop: Downtown Discoveries

Take a break from the vineyards and explore the shops along 1st Street in downtown Napa. From independent boutiques to renowned chains, you'll find a variety of clothing, shoes, and souvenirs to bring home.

All Aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train

Consider a unique journey aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train. Though we didn't have the time, this luxurious train offers a scenic ride through the valley, complete with gourmet meals on board and stops at wineries for tastings. Learn about the different routes and the indulgent options available for an unforgettable experience on rails.
