Normally when we travel, we embark on a gastronomic adventure that unveils a world of new flavours that can only be found in local mom-and-pop restaurants, or legendary hole-in-the-wall spots. While exploring local gems is still a must, something funny happened when we reached Manilla. We discovered that this bustling Metropolis also boasts an array of enticing, as well as some of our classic favourite chain restaurants. There is a fusion of international and Filipino flavours to discover here, so for perhaps the only time, allow us to share with you the chain restaurants you simply must visit!

1. Din Tai Fung: Unveiling the Art of Xiao Long Bao

Originating from Taiwan, Din Tai Fung has become a global sensation, and Manila is no exception. Known for its delicate xiao long bao, or soup dumplings, this chain has perfected the art of crafting these little parcels of delight. Our recommendation is to splurge for the black truffle pork soup dumplings – a decadent twist that will leave you chasing this chain around the world.

2. Manam: A Filipino Culinary Odyssey

With locations scattered across Manila, Manam takes Filipino comfort food to new heights. Offering both classic renditions and contemporary twists, Manam provides an ideal introduction to the diverse flavours of Filipino cuisine. Our favourite was the overloaded garlicky chicken and pork belly adobo, a standout dish embodying the perfect harmony of traditional flavours and modern innovation.

3. Nobu: A Culinary Oasis in the Heart of Manila

Housed in the renowned Nobu Hotel, this upscale chain brings the iconic Nobu experience to Manila. Originating from the genius partnership of Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro, and Meir Teper, the restaurant serves classic dishes in either a stunning indoor dining room or on a picturesque outdoor patio. During our visit a DJ also provided a rhythmic backdrop, making Nobu Manila a complete feast for the senses. The lychee martini here, as well as in all other locations, is our absolute favourite.

4. Potato Corner: The Filipino Snacking Sensation

Born in the Philippines and now spreading its roots globally, Potato Corner is a beloved chain for those seeking a delightful snack. Choose your preferred size of fries and customize them with an array of flavorful powdered toppings, from cheese to sour cream and onion. Whether on street corners or inside malls, Potato Corner is a convenient and tasty pitstop.

5. Jollibee: A Taste of Filipino Fast Food

No exploration of chain restaurants in Manila is complete without a visit to Jollibee, the Filipino fast-food giant. While it may not be a culinary revelation, Jollibee holds a special place in Filipino hearts for its signature Chickenjoy, Jolly Spaghetti, and iconic bee mascot. Consider it a cultural experience and a quick, familiar bite when in Manila. Oh and be sure to save room to have the peach mango pie for dessert.

6. Hawker Chan: Michelin-Starred Delights from Singapore

Hawker Chan, born from the hawker stalls of Singapore, has earned a Michelin star for its delectable soy sauce chicken rice and noodle dishes. A culinary pilgrimage for food enthusiasts, the Manila outpost offers a taste of this renowned dish. If you haven't had the chance to savour it in Singapore, Hawker Chan in Manila is an excellent opportunity to experience this culinary gem.

In the vast culinary landscape of Manila, these chain restaurants add an unusually tempting layer to your gastronomic journey. From the artistry of Din Tai Fung to the cultural touchstone of Jollibee, each establishment weaves a tale of flavours that contribute to the vibrant culinary tapestry of the Philippines' capital.
