Chitwan National Park: Our Stay at Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge
Updated: Apr 19
Nestled in the heart of Nepal, there lies a must-visit natural paradise for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. From breathtaking encounters with wildlife to immersive cultural experiences, Chitwan National Park promises an unforgettable journey that will leave you in awe.
Chitwan National Park is situated in the subtropical lowlands of southern Nepal. It was by no means a quick journey. We began with a flight from Kathmandu to Bharatpur airport, followed by a long drive down bumpy roads (which should be smoother now post-construction). This UNESCO World Heritage site is renowned for its diverse ecosystem and rich biodiversity and covers an impressive area of 952.63 square kilometres. The park is particularly celebrated for its efforts in conserving the endangered one-horned rhinoceros and Bengal tiger. However, its wildlife offerings extend far beyond these charismatic favourites. With more than 700 species, including elephants, deer, leopards, crocodiles, and various birds, Chitwan is a haven for animal lovers.
Our safari was rather unique, in that it began with a boat ride across the Rapti River, and only once we reached the banks on the other side did we load into our jeep for the day. Throughout the morning we saw many rhinos and elephants, and enjoyed an incredible breakfast overlooking the dense terrain. We were never lucky enough to spot a tiger here, although we we met other groups staying at our lodge who did. Overall there are not as many safaris happening in this area as there are in other parks such as India’s Ranthambore, so the tigers are still quite shy of people and therefore elusive.
During our exploration of Chitwan National Park, we had the pleasure of staying at the Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge. This wonderful abode seamlessly blends the allure of Nepalese culture with modern comforts. The lodge’s commitment to providing an authentic experience while offering a touch of luxury (like a swimming pool) made our stay truly remarkable.
Tharu Lodge’s exquisite cuisine introduced us to the vibrant flavours of Nepalese dishes. While the Western offerings were delightful, the local cuisine truly stole the show. The culinary journey was only enhanced by the atmosphere: an inviting main lodge where all of the guests gather together to enjoy their meals under the beautiful thatched roof. Hearing everyone abuzz with their day’s excitement makes one feel like a kid back in summer camp, were it not for the cold beer in hand.
But the food and comforts aside, the one thing that makes Tharu Lodge an absolute must stay, is their extensive list of excursions. Upon booking, we were sent a lengthy document and had to make the difficult decision of which few we would decide to try. Our first choice was an elephant sundowner. Tharu Lodge cares for a herd of elephants near the main camp and therefore offers a plethora of ethical experiences you can do with these animals. During this activity, we walked alongside the elephants and their mahouts as they went for their evening stroll. This walk ended at the river where, as the elephants played in the water, we sipped cocktails and watched them play from the bank. The staff at the lodge had driven out in a jeep to set up a makeshift riverside bar when the gin and tonics ran as smoothly as the sun set into the water.
For us, it was the walking safari that stole the spotlight. We will forever remember the day that we came eye to eye with a one-horned rhino on foot. Guided by an elephant and its mahout at the front, and another pair at the back, a group of us guests from the lodge ventured out into the dense jungle nearby. Only ten minutes into our journey, we spotted a lone rhino grazing in the field up ahead, blocking our path. The presence of these gentle giants added an air of safety, as they skillfully maneuvered the rhino in a half circle around us, allowing the group to continue on unscathed. The adrenaline rush and the feeling of vulnerability intertwined, and the group remained elated for the rest of the journey.
While the journey to reach Chitwan National Park was a bit involved, the rewards were immeasurable. It may not have the polish or flash of other safari camps in more visited parks of the world, but rather it contains an authentic experience like no other. The unique blend of wildlife encounters, the on-site elephant herd, cultural immersion, and wonderful accommodations make the Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge an unparalleled destination. The elusive tigers, the breathtaking landscapes, and the sheer diversity of wildlife make Chitwan a jewel in Nepal’s crown. So, if you’re seeking a blend of adventure, culture, and comfort, Chitwan National Park should undoubtedly find its place on your travel bucket list.
