Chateau de Sacy: The Serene Retreat with a Bubbly Personality
Updated: May 26
Nestled in the heart of the Champagne region of France, Chateau de Sacy offers a sublime retreat amidst sprawling vineyards, far removed from the busy cities of Reims and Epernay, and yet still close enough to explore them both. This boutique gem of a hotel not only captures the essence of the French countryside, but also provides a continuous glimpse into life on a vineyard.
Chateau de Sacy is a 15-20 minute drive away from Champagne’s main town of Reims. Our taxi ride into the city cost us 35 Euros, while the Uber ride back to the tranquility of our château was only 25. It is a slightly longer 25-30 minute drive down to the town of Epernay, which means this hotel is located in a sweet spot to allow you to savor the best of every world - the vibrancy of Reims, the charm of Epernay, and a serene countryside vineyard.
The main allure of this property lies in its picturesque charm, appearing every bit the quintessential wine region stay. Wandering through its halls and into our room felt like stepping into a storybook, and somehow every nook we explored was even more beautiful than the photos online. Our visit in late August meant the vines outside our window were at their fullest bloom, creating a spectacular backdrop of a mesmerizing sea of green.
Picture this: outdoor hot tubs crafted from former wine barrels, set against the backdrop of the vineyard, where you can have glasses of bubbles delivered to you while you soak. The ambiance was straight out of a movie. Our only quibble was that, for us, these tubs were more of a lukewarm bath than a hot tub. We expressed this concern to quite surprised staff members, however the next day the temperature remained unchanged. A tip for future guests - take a dip during the day while the sun is still around to work its magic.
It is however the restaurant at Chateau de Sacy that steals the spotlight, drawing patrons from across the region for lunch and dinner. The dining room is French countryside chic, and the patio extends off this area, abutting right up against the vines. Of course, the champagne made from the grapes in front of you, Mobillion, is served in the restaurant, and it is so delicious it is not to be missed! We loved it so much that we ventured to their shop nearby in Sacy to purchase a bottle to bring home.
When the kind owners informed us the price was only 19 Euros a bottle, we quickly increased our order to three! Not only are these bottles special to us because we stayed among their vines and enjoyed the taste, but because it is with this bottle that we first learned to saber champagne. To indulge in this experience you must book in advance and arrive before the dinner rush begins, and then the servers at Chateau de Sacy will teach you how to properly saber a bottle of champagne for only the price of the bottle you choose. It was a real thrill we would encourage you to experience!
The culinary delights also extended to their breakfasts, served in a room off the main dining area with wall-to-wall glass on all sides to enjoy uninterrupted views of the vines and town. With made-to-order eggs and an array of pastries, it is the perfect pre-champagne-tasting feast. The servers even brought out a chilled bottle of Mobillon champagne, so we added only a splash of orange juice, and turned our breakfast into an indulgent affair.
Chateau de Sacy is not just a hotel; it is a symphony of charm, luxury, and pure Champagne magic. From the enchanting setting to the thrilling sabering experience, topped off with delectable dining, our stay here was a sensory journey through the heart of the Champagne region. For those seeking an authentic vineyard stay, and are willing to drive the extra miles for the experience, Chateau de Sacy is an opulent celebration of the art of living well in Champagne.
