Journey to the stars: 3 best stargazing spots around the world
Updated: Apr 15
There is something magical about gazing up at the night sky, contemplating the vastness of the universe and feeling a profound connection 9with nature and your own place in it. Whether you’re an astronomy enthusiast with a bag full of camera lenses, or simply someone with a cell phone camera you try to hold very still(like we do), stargazing can be an unforgettable experience. Here are the three best stargazing spots we have found around the world where you too can indulge in a unique and awe-inspiring celestial display.
Number 3: Joshua Tree National Park
Nestled in California’s Mojave Desert, Joshua Tree National Park has become a renowned destination for both nature lovers and stargazers alike. This surreal landscape is characterized by its namesake Joshua Trees, unique rock formations, and wide-open spaces. With minimal light pollution and clear skies, Joshua Tree provides an excellent canvas for observing the stars.
The only downside: with its stellar star reputation, it can be difficult to live up to all the hype.
Number 2: Wadi Rum, Jordan
Venturing into the heart of the same desert that is the backdrop for countless Hollywood blockbusters, Wadi Rum offers an otherworldly stargazing opportunity. The day we spent here exploring the many dunes and rock formations with our Bedouin guide was completed by sharing a cup of tea with him and his brothers. We collected nearby wood scraps to fuel the desert fire the tea was brewed over, finishing just in time to watch the incredible sunset. But after that sun did set, the true magic began. We stayed in a dome-shaped tent inside a desert camp, with a 180-degree panoramic window from which to view the night sky without ever leaving our bed. The silence of the desert and the incredible starry panorama that covered it left a permanent mark on our souls.
The single downside: our next-door tent neighbors who did not get the memo we were all here to see the night sky, and refused to turn off their lights. Our solution? We turned our lights on and off repeatedly until they got the message, and then we could all enjoy the beauty together.
Number 1: La Digue, Seychelles The Best Stargazing!
A tiny island in the Indian Ocean, La Digue is a hidden gem that entices travelers with its untouched natural beauty and unique way of life. Here, bicycles replace cars, and the pace of life slows down to match the tranquil rhythm of the tides. We came here chasing the island's earthly wonders, spending our days lounging on the world-famous beaches scattered with unbelievable rock formations. It was only after one of these long days, when we took a bottle of wine down to the water, planning to watch the waves crash under the moonlight, that we realized La Digue’s real magic lay above in the night sky.
With almost no light pollution, La Digue boasts one of the clearest skies in the world. As twilight descends, millions of stars emerge, creating a breathtaking celestial spectacle we witnessed, and yet still could not believe. Never before had we seen a sky so full from corner to corner with stars.
The only downside: No other night sky will ever live up to this.
So fellow travelers, pack your bags, embrace the darkness, and prepare for an extraordinary adventure under the twinkling night sky.
